HP Presario SR1500NX 1GB mem & Ubuntu 14.04 very very slow

Hello,
This is my first genuine attempt to make this PC a Linux machine.
This is the only software on the machine.
I do not know if the problem is the software version or a PC issue.
I will gladly install a more appropriate version if you think the fit might be better for this PC, or if necessary, increase memory.
Please advise and help with a cure. I am determined to start working/learning with Linux.

Thank You,
Older New Guy

You would probably be better off if you could add memory or try some other Ubuntu derivatives that aren't as heavy, Lubuntu or Xubuntu come to mind.

I want to thank you for your advise. i will add memory, but 2GB is max for this PC, it's kinda old. XP was installed when new, is that a clue. Which distribution is better, or does it Matter?

Thanks again guys,

Try Xubuntu 1st. If too slow. Then try Lubuntu. Both are Ubuntu. So no best figures in here.
