How to install programs or apps ?

I download this file and it came as a .exe file. I tried running ./configure, but that didn't do nothing. I seriously have no ideal how to install these programs under llinux. Can someone please show me an example on how to execute these files.

Thanks

I download this software, it came in an .gz format, I then extract it, and a .exe came from the file.

The software is definetly for linux.

run "file nameofthatfilethatyouthinkisforlinux.exe" and see what it says about it.

if you give us the name of the file, program, it might help us determine that ?

most .exe files are binary executables for windows based systems. i have yet to see a executable in linux use a .exe extension.

Nvm guys, I figured it out.

There is only one other problem. I download LimeWire but it came with a .bin extension. I'm not sure how to work with these files. I tried the command "bash Li* " which went throught the install process then it stopped and said that I have to install VM prior installing this. The thing ist that I have VM installed all ready and it keeps saying that.

Can you guys help me, I'm a super newb in the linux are but one day i want to become very familiar with it as I am with windows.

there's *plenty* of help about limewire on this site already, have a search. but...

WHY do you want limewire? people get so confused by that huge lump of crap cos it's in java. where did you find out about it? do you know that there are LOTS of native linux gnutella applicaions around? lok for gtk-gnutella or qtella as a start.

hmm.. they seem pretty good so far. Which one do you recommend to use, just trying to save disk space ?

But can someone please help me with my last reply, about the vm? Is vm dependent on any other software, maybe thats why?

It is refering to Java VM (virtual machine), do you have java installed? If it came as a part of kaffe you need to uninstall kaffe and install jre or jsdk from either http://java.sun.com or http://www.blackdown.com, then you need to adjust your $PATH env variable to point to java, and run LimeWire setup again. Search these forums for LimeWire and Java, it's been explained in a dozen of threads here
