How can I scan on a wireless network, and retrival the results?

Hi all !

I need to write a C/C++ application that scans for Wireless networks.
What is the native way for doing this? I mean, not using external tools...
I have a sample that uses iwlist scan that produces the desired output. Is there a way to do this without running this shell command?

Thanks.

On my box, iwlist is a binary:
Code:
win32sux@candystore:~$ file /sbin/iwlist
/sbin/iwlist: ELF 32-bit LSB executable, Intel 80386, version 1 (SYSV), for GNU/Linux 2.6.8, dynamically linked (uses shared libs), stripped
Wouldn't you just need to look at its source code?
