hostname in /var/log/messages not printing

In short: I have a few systems with supposedly identical installs. In /var/log/messages most of them print the system hostname on each line just after the timestamp...but some of them just say "linux" instead. Why is this?

I know this is a simple configuration variance...but I haven't been able to find the source.

Your assistance is appreciated. My apologies if this is so simple I should be flogged!

Flog away (but please only after a couple of hints at the answer)

Compare /etc/hosts and /etc/hostname on a machine that is working the way you want with the rogue box.

hmm. well, on the working systems and on the rogue systems, there is not an /etc/hostname file.

This is suse 8.0 by the way.

/etc/hosts is the same on working and rogue systems.

I don't know where SuSE writes the hostname to. You can just issue the `hostname` command on them to see what prints out also.

yep, as far as I can tell, the hostname is set correctly on each system.
