grub boot loader with external SATA hard drive

I have windows XP installed on a internal IDE drive, and now have Ubuntu installed onto a external eSATA drive, and uses GRUB stage 1.5 The issue I now have is that when the external drive is turned off and unplugged, then my 2006 AMD Athlon Gateway PC will not boot,(grub error 21), so how can I fix this so that I do not allways need to have the external drive on? Mayby if I install a second Linux distro onto the windows drive by re-sizeing the main XP partition ?

Read this (it explains far better that I can), I think you can get by just by installing grub in its own partition on your ide drive. This article explains how to do that with a linux cd or you can download grub and install from a floppy or cd.
