Gnome/KDE


yea ive tried both gnome and KDE on my mandrake10 and for some reason gnome seems to run so much slower..takes forever to open folders etc...
is gnome supposed 2 run slower than kde? (im on a 233mhz btw) or is there a way to maybe speed it up

No they didn't write it so that it's supposed to run slower. Could be a config problem, could be there is too much extra crap being loaded into memory.

Take a look at top and see what all is running and kill what ya don't need. That'll give you a good idea of how to reconfigure.

As I hear it go, GNOME requires much more RAM than KDE to be running at a comfortable speed. GNOME has acknowledged it's speed deficiencies and has put up a bounty for developers to optimize it. Not only that, there are some plans for fundamental redesigns. You may want to try installing XFCE: it is quiet speedy.

kde libs are more self contained and there is a kde app in the background that keeps everything preloaded...for speed
