As I hear it go, GNOME requires much more RAM than KDE to be running at a comfortable speed. GNOME has acknowledged it's speed deficiencies and has put up a bounty for developers to optimize it. Not only that, there are some plans for fundamental redesigns. You may want to try installing XFCE: it is quiet speedy.
