gentoo install failure - now booting from liveCD but mount does not find HD

I installed gentoo using the GUI and honestly I didn't know exactly what I was doing but something must have gone quite wrong. When I started up my computer the next time I was unable to login but I am 100% certain I was entering the correct username and password. So I booted from the liveCD and planned on chrooting in and changing the root password of my system only to find that hd2 does not exist. so...help?
