GeckoRolling boot stops - error before [devicename] login:prompt
From a full install on external ssd - 512MB EFI with 70GB ext4 and remainder as NTFS. Boot from Win10p machine bios bootlist.
All working a couple of days ago.
Full updates, languages, browser change and Docker - all via Yast.
Access to Windows folders and seemingly fully functional without glitches.
Beginner here so went by the book and no terminal stuff.
Last attempts at boot give this error almost instantly ....
5.6942481 ioremap error for 0x78e31000 - 0x78e32000, requested 0x2, got 0x0
Then [devicename] login: flashing prompt and nothing after that.
Just tried recovery and got a long list of activity ending in a stopped flashing cursor .... no red text seen.
Tried typing "exit" and a couple of other things .... got to my user name and password with following response ...
"You have no mail"
"Have a lot of fun ..."
"()"
Developer humour?
Gecko Rolling Plasma 210519
Trying to learn Linux ... so dont know where to go from that.
Trying to learn from a rolling release is a bigger job than from a stable release. It requires more maintenance, and more opportunity to need maintenance or repair that you are ill equipped to handle without help.
Do you have Windows configured with fast boot disabled? If not, disable it before attempting to boot Linux after a Windows shutdown, or, restart the computer instead of shutting it down when you have booted from Windows and wish to switch to Linux.
Does your Grub menu offer an older kernel to boot from? If yes, did you try it?
What exactly do you mean by "recovery"?
The appearance of "Have a lot of fun..." normally means you have booted into an operational condition, but without a working GUI environment. Below that message should be a login prompt. Is it missing? Do you see '"()"' in between, or instead of, a login prompt?
Do you have Windows installed on the same external SSD, or is it just a data partition?
Thank you - mrmazda.
Background story first:
Have had dual boot OpenSuse on wXPp and w7p from 11, 13,4?, Leap 15.
Always worked.
But as I have recently gone to w10p I was very aware that MS like to play silly bugers with updates and so forth so this time I wanted two things .....
To have a full Linux install that I could move between two laptops and tht could be regarded as portable.
And to keep the Win10p separate from the Linux.
Started with Static Gecko ... and had a very long "learning" molehill with many problems (some related to this Dell having Raid as default and making a fuss over booting from Thunderbolt.
With help from others (including GeckoLinux) I eventually got an install that Calamares would accept.
This worked very well and enabled me to do full updates and have complete and fautless functionality (except system time and so was advised to uncheck that option in Yast).
So to answer your first point directly ...
Had already tried static but went for rolling as I was struggling with it.
Always had fat start disabled and secure boot not enabled.
Grub offers standard boot and recovery only.
Up till yesterday the standard boot worked without issue and got me login screen quickly.
I see your point about "recovery" ... am sure that is what the second option is/was called ... but can check again when I have typed this as I am of course on Windows now.
As for Windows ...
It is on a primary NVME drive which I removed for the installation of Gecko.
So everything Linux sits on the external usb ssd as per first line of my first post.
On this external ssd the third partition is for NTFS data storage.
Then your questions as to what I see ...
Normal Grub Gecko boot screen .... select option one which is standard Gecko.
Smaller black rectangke appears and instantly see two lines of code along the lines of ..
Gecko version something ...
Loading kernal (I think).
HERE** Then normally a line with [my device name] login: followed by a flashing cursor for a very short time.
Then normal login screen for my password.
This is now stopping at the line marked HERE**
That is where the error is shown.
Followed now by the usual [my device name] login: cursor flashing ...
But this time nothing happens next ... it just sits with otherwise black rectangle within normal screen.
I was going to attempt to boot from the live usb this evening but dont really know what to do if I can see all directories !
Hope that is enough to give you a better idea of this situation.
Paul
UPDATE:
Checked those screens from your questions...
First normal screen is two lines ..
Gecko normal
Gecko Advanced.
Advanced goes to four lines .... and you were correct (had not noticed).
There are two versions.
5.12.4-1 default
5.12.4-1 Recovery
5.13.3-1 default
5.12.3-1 Recovery
Current response to all options is ...
Black smaller rectangle
Booting 'Gecko ...
Loading Linux [version]...
Loading initial ramdisk ...
Then hangs with fixed cursor and no response to keyboard.
At the Grub menu, strike the E key, and on the line that begins linu (which usually wraps to the next line), delete quiet and splash=silent, then append plymouth=0, then proceed to boot. Does it help?
Thank you mrmazda.
Sadly no.
I found "quiet" but did not have "splash=silent".
Instead had ....
"quiet splash apparmor=0"
Tried both deleting "apparmor=0" and leaving it alone (adding "plymouth=0 in both cases).
Now on Android ... with "loading initial ramdisk" frozen for several minutes.
EDIT:
Just used a Rolling usb and now on Static usb.
Both have full access to the ext4 main partition.
Is that any use ?
Paul
Following your first line where you say static would be a better option .... I think I am going to drop this install and replace with static.
Cannot get this rolling one to boot so it is currently useless.
Over and out
Paul
