Fresh install of Debian 9 recognizes audio interface as a sound input device, however will not capture/record/pick-up audio

OS: Debian 9
Gear: Behringer UMC404HD usb audio interface; MXL 770 condenser mic; Asus N550JV laptop.

The built in microphone on the laptop is recognized as an input device and also captures sound properly.

The audio interface, which I have a pair of headphones and a separate analog mic, plays back sound perfectly through the headphones. However, the mic connected to the interface does not capture audio. In the sound settings, the line for input is shown under the input tab, however when i speak into it, the input meter does not budge.

The same interface/mic combo works perfectly on Linux Mint that is installed on another laptop. It also works on Windows 8.1 which is installed on the same computer as Debian 9 on a separate partition.

Wondering if someone has had a similar issue, or can direct me in the appropriate troubleshooting direction. I am new to linux and do not know how to manage the sound settings well.

Thanks for anyone who took the time to read
