Evolution mail always crashes in Ubuntu 9.04

Hi everybody!

I encounter a serious problem with evolution mail in ubuntu jaunty ...
probably after a recent upgrade!

When I click on Evolution Mail icon the applications is loading o.k.
Then at the bottom bar it shows the message "Fetching Mail (...)" And then it suddenly closes... And this behaviour is a standard one.

a) I erased the .evolution directory in case it is corrupted, so forcing the application to re-create it... No success.

b) I booted using the previous kernel (2.6.28-13-generic) The new one is 2.6.28-14-generic ... Same problem

c) I re-installed the application ... No luck!

d) I checked the /etc/nsswitch.conf file... Here is it's content

passwd: compat
group: compat
shadow: compat

hosts: files mdns4_minimal [NOTFOUND=return] dns mdns4
networks: files

protocols: db files
services: db files
ethers: db files
rpc: db files

netgroup: nis

I don't see something strange here ...

Does anyone experience the same problem ?
What shall I do ? Wait for the next upgrade or turn back to Thunderbird?

Please help me ... this is important!

Greetings
Vas

Please run evolution from terminal (e.g. gnome-terminal) and reproduce the crash.
In case it show some information just after the crash happens, post it here.

If it does not show any information, we will need to force creating core dumps and examine it with gdb.
But please check the terminal output first.

This can be anything ranging from network library gone wild to X server problem.

Thanks rtg for your very quick response !

I think I just found what caused the problem !
I have two e-mail accounts, both with the same e-mail address xxx@foo.com provided by ISP (A)

account 1: xxx@foo.com , POP3 by (A) , SMPT by (A) This is my default e-mail, and I use it at home, where I have services from ISP (A)... So far so good

account 2: xxx@foo.com , POP3 by (A) , SMTP by (B) This is the e-mail I use at my country home, where my brother has services from ISP (B). ISP (B) doesn't allow me to sent e-mail using SMTP by (A) even if it is SSL authenticated. See the point?

Well, yesterday I sent an e-mail from account 2: of course, since I am in country home. But the attachment was big, and the mail didn't send. So today while receiving back an error message (that is why evolution was trying to Fetch some message ...) It was account 1: (the default one) that was activated...

THE WORKAROUND
So I unchecked account 1: and made account 2: the default one ...
Now every message I sent and receive even if it is by myself, does not cause any problems!

The question still remains though.. Why evolution should close after this error? shouldn't It just warn you and let you continue to work with the app?

regards
Vas!

It is most likely a bug, no matter how big an attachment the software should not decide to quit in such a manner.

You may want to file this as a bug to Evolution bugzilla if you know how to reproduce it without your files.

Yes I think I'll do that ... After all in Windows Vista I use the same trick as here. Vista Mail received the error-report (from the un-sent message) normally, so I could free the server. That's why I could use evolution mail afterwards ...
To reproduce the bug is easy.
