1.9.x looks a good bet. Download the application and run it. Wine may require that you download extra packages to run it - in that case allow Wine to do so when requested.
Created a snapshot, then downloaded the Kindle program to the default setting "Save File" in a newly created folder called "Windows Software". From there it, and the other needed files, were installed without error. But I have no clue where the program was actually installed or how to run it.
Well apparently I've done it again!
When I refresh from the shield the following error list is generated:
Code:

Right, back to Amazon Kindle. I tried installing the latest version 1.24 and it failed (you should have seen a failure error too while trying to install it). So I had a look again at Wine's page for the application - https://appdb.winehq.org/objectManag...tion&iId=10597 - looking for the most recent version that is rated the highest, Platinum. This is 1.17.x. You can download this from https://filehippo.com/download_kindle_for_pc/69970/
Once downloaded, right click on the exe file and choose Open With->Wine Windows Program Loader.
After the installation is finished, you should see a link to Kindle in the Mint Menu.
cat /etc/apt/sources.list.d/additional-repositories.list
deb https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubuntu/ xenial main
That's very strange. The Update Manager appears to erroneously producing those warnings. I wouldn't expect it to be cacheing the software sources though. Just in case it is, have you tried rebooting?
I may not have executed the commands correctly the first time. Rebooted the computer and sent them again - this time one at a time.
Code:
cat /etc/apt/sources.list.d/additional-repositories.list
deb https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubuntu/ xenial main
deb https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubuntu/ xenial main
No command 'deb' found, did you mean:
Command 'deb3' from package 'quilt' (universe)
Command 'debi' from package 'devscripts' (main)
Command 'derb' from package 'icu-devtools' (main)
Command 'dex' from package 'dex' (universe)
Command 'dab' from package 'bsdgames' (universe)
Command 'dub' from package 'dub' (universe)
Command 'debc' from package 'devscripts' (main)
Command 'xdeb' from package 'xdeb' (universe)
deb: command not found
Running the Kindle package with Wine Windows Program Loader seems to unpack a bunch of files and nothing more, not even an error message. Kindle is nowhere to be found.
This is something that probably should be continued Monday. Enjoy your Sunday and thanks again for your patience.
No, tonight's fine if you're there. What I'll need you to do though, if you don't mind, is be around for an hour or so and also not carry out any commands that I don't advise within that time frame until we solve this (or give up).
I have tried installing a different version of Kindle (1.17) by downloading using "Open with Wine Windows Program Loader" and by "Saving to..." and running the same installer program, but all it does is unpack the files and never actually runs. So to find out is the "Wine Windows Program Loader" was actually not working correctly I tried installing Notepad++ using the same method and it installed perfectly. Also installed Chrome the same way. I don't know why Kindle will not install, it - like Notepad - is an exe file. Chrome is a deb file and both and Notepad++ install without a hitch. At this point I'm not sure what to think other then Wine is working correctly. I'm running Linux Mint 18.3, could that have something to do with it?

Kindle appears to be working for me fine on Mint 19 (well it installs, produces shortcut icons and runs anyway) so I imagine that it will also work on 18.3. Who knows though. You don't download files from the web with "Open with Wine Windows Program Loader" so your description is confusing me there. Also, if Chrome is a deb file then it runs under Linux, not Wine. I'll be available later today if you want me to look at it with you.
When I download a file Linux Mint, with Wine installed gives me 2 options
1. Open with Wine Windows Program Loader (default)
2. Save to
The same options appear where it is an .exe or a .deb file. Both Chrome and Notepad++ install correctly, but Kindle never installs. I am in the process of making a bootable USB with Linux 19 on it and try it on another computer that has successfully run Mint 17.3.
I have an appointment this afternoon, but can get back to you afterwards.

Ok, that looks fine thanks. When you get back, can you let me know if updating Mint through the Update Manager still gives you the warning messages you mentioned in post #32?
