Apart from the Live Cd issue, there is again another distro that is very beginner-friendly.

Xandros Linux.

It's installation is simple. The interface looks like Win$ (great for Win$ addits and newbies to Linux) and it comes with some great drivers (great for newbies who can't stand building up drivers)!

kubuntu or xubuntu

try the Ubuntu group, they really are (in my humble opinion) the most complete and easy to use debian based distributions.

Ubuntu : Gnome
Kubuntu : KDE
Xubuntu : XFCE (very light)
