Exclamation diffrence between grep, sed, awk and egrep


Whais the difference between grep, sed, awk and egrep commands?

grep and egrep are search tools, egrep with a more complex set of regular expressions.
sed is a stream editor, it's meant for on-the-fly replacement of text.
awk is pretty much a small programming language that revolves around text processing
and combines features of all of the above and more.

and usually the text man prefixxing any commands or things gives its manual (if manual is present try :-
man grep
man egrep etc in console and see

Go to TLDP.org and download the Bash Scripting Guide: "Bash Guide for Beginners" by Machtelt Garrels. Very good intro to all such things.
