Desktop Icons - Gone. Can't Open Folders

Hello,

I have been using and loving Linux for 10 years now but I'm still a newbie so please help with detailed advice.

I was opening some files on a NAS via smb when all of the sudden all of the remote files closed along with all of my desktop icons disappearing. Now, I can open any application but if I try to open a folder of any kind, the folder will open for a second AND for that brief second I can see the icons return to my desktop but it all clears after a fraction of a second.

I ran a system update. I reinstalled nautilus since when I tried to run it in terminal it said it wasn't installed. After installing nautilus and running in terminal the same thing happened, icons appear for a moment then disappear.

I'm running Mint 17.2 Qiana. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Craig

I'm no expert (as will probably be shown by subsequent replies ), but it sounds to me as if Nautilus is crashing for some reason.

Could you run nautilus from the command line again and paste the output here within CODE tags (see the # button in the Linux Questions advanced edit toolbar)?

Thanks for the quick reply! While I was gone I found a suggestion to log out of my user account, log in as a guest, log out of guest and shutdown, then log back in as normal. Everything restored!! Don't ask me why, how or what but it worked. Thanks again for the willing help.
