Customizing

I have installed Slack 9 on my machine and I think it's great. I wish to get as much out of linux as possible, yet I feel that something's missing. Many people speak of the customization of linux to fit your machine as the most important and educational part of this experience. My question is: How does one go about preforming this vital act?

I don't need you to give me the specifics for my computer, but if you could suggest a general method that would be of great help.

Thanks in advance
