the CentOS 5.x line uses a kernel that is to old to run Chrome.

You can either upgrade to CentOS 6.x has a newer kernel that you will have no issues getting Chrome installed. Same goes for Fedora. to be blunt if you are running CentOS as a desktop you are doing it wrong. CentOS is basically RHE, this is a server it is NOT for bleeding edge tech like Chrome.
