Question Cannot browse the MS site through new Mandrake firewall.....

Key issue/question: Cannot browse the MS site through new Mandrake firewall.....??

Okay..a perplexing question I have already spent too much time on...I have searched around for info on the issue, including this excellent site.

I have just set up a new Linux firewall with Mandrake 10 to replace an earlier linux (Mandrake SNF) box.

Installed Mandrake 10, downloaded the updates, setup 2 nics for internal and external addresses, installed apache, squid, squidGuard. Then eventually configured everything up to proxy and keep out the unsavoury sites (pr0n, gambling, violence etc) with the blacklist, updated blacklists etc....and like it works very well...real impressed!!!

btw - urpmi is an absolute treat to use in my book...

Throughout the setup I noted that if I browsed locally on the firewall with either Konqueror or Mozilla I could access every site except Microsoft's, the same deal happens when I browse through this firewall testing the proxy via a windows client (that is already okay to browse MS site on the other firewall).

Note: this browsing issue happened well before I configured up apache, squid, and squidGuard...just though it would be easy to fix later...

The browse testing being part of the final testing before I switch the boxes around. - The trouble is that a page from Microsoft either does not load correctly/fully or loads as gibberish...??!!
- not impressed, all other sites not blacklisted and the other tech sites I need to access, like Cisco, CA, and Veritas are fine.

As the site main OS is Microsoft, we need to browse Microsoft and Windows Update as required to support the site.

This issue with browsing to Microsoft through this new firewall is being a real pain. - yeh I know there can be a standards issue, but I am so *over* any criticisms or issues of Linux versus Microsoft [some linux sites skirt around the problem] I just need to get this issue sorted ASAP please...as the old firewall has issues...

any suggestions please??

cheers,

More info on problems getting to MS site....

More info on getting to MS site....

Further to my earlier post the Microsoft home page loads very slowly, then if I go to technet I just get either nothing (with contents/page has moved) or a whole bunch of scripts in text for the default.mspx page.

I have configured Mozilla via preferences ad nauseum, and altered the various browser settings in Konqueror - but no success with either.

Javascript is installed and I have turned the settings on for the pages etc.....

As I change browser setting I am re-testing with other tech sites and general sites, and I can access these sites with either Mozilla or Konqueror with no other issues are arising.

{EDIT: after turning the pop up ads on - it appears to be sort of working but only for Mozilla not for Konqueror.
I can now get some technet - I will try the proxy settings in this manner as well...then there is the the auto updates and windows updates etc etc to check yet...}
