byobu keys/chars mapping using ssh

Hello all, first post from a linux newbie, please bear with me :-)
I installed ubuntu 15.10 server 64bit on VMware and it runs just fine.
On occasions, I perform system checks requiring two o three applications running at the same time (say top, tail and vi) and found byobu very handy to split the screen into several windows.
However, keybindings, colors and text symbols showed on screen seem to depend on whether I run byobu locally or via ssh with putty.
Is there any way to make byobu behave in the same way either when running locally or from putty? Many thanks.
// Marco

Thank you for the tip, Elizine.
However, my question about keybindings, colors and text symbols that appear to change when using ssh still remains unanswered. Anyone?
