You mentioned that part supporting the roller actually broken If you examine picture 3-99, it looks like it might be feasible to attempt to fashion some kind of support and fix it to the DX chassis. Or perhaps you could glue the part together again (using an appropriate plastic glue of course). It might take some thought and ingenuity here if you have to make a part, but worth a shot perhaps?

Thanks for the thought. I did spend 4 years working in the UK and thoroughly enjoyed my time there - my father is English, so I'm lucky enough an EU passport as well as my NZ passport.

many thanks Ferrari - while I very much appreciate your views and thoughts - which i totally agree with - it is perhaps better I now shelve this project and put my time to better use. these printers - indeed newer models - are widely available on the Ebay market , and for extremely reasonable prices. It's been a good excersise but common sense would seem to prevail and that I simply move on.
many many thanks for your interest and help - it has been greatly appreciated. Best Regards Bill Sunny Scotland!!!!! To be honest I'm now going to completely rebuild it again - just for the excersise!!!!

I agree - the pragmatic approach is sometimes best. Buy another and move on.

h Ferrari......agree. I'm actually looking at the 6510 as it is a full A3 scanner - the 5910 is A4 scanning. re the 5910 attempted repair it is annoying that a part probably costing only a few pence (cents) will be preventing the repair of a machine otherwise in good condition - very annoying!!!!!

I'm told the 6720 (latest A3 model) retails at £299 UK pounds.

These 6510's are quite cheap on Ebay too.

Many thanks again for your interest - and much appreciated help, without you I wouldn't have got so far! Bill

And this is the part I need - surely I must be able to get this.......the whole item is smaller than a pencil in circumference !!!!

It is a shame, but it's the way of the world, especially where plastic parts are concerned it would seem. One possibility for the adventurous might be to try and get the part re-created using 3D printing technology. You'd have to scan and/or model it, then get it printed in ABS resin. Not as complex (or expensive) as it sounds, since there are numerous companies doing this kind of work now, but uncharted territory for most people I suspect. Some companies specialise in the printing from valid STL models, some specialise in the scanning to produce models, and some do both. Maybe you could find a hobbyist with such a scanner and printer who would be willing to help. I'll leave you to ponder that further.

thanks for that but I'm thinking that Brother should surely be able to supply such a part - if nothing else then as a PR exercise......although I am definitely willing to pay for it!

No harm in asking, but I don't like your chances. (It would be nice if they'd consider allowing you to trade it in, given that is 99.5% complete.)

Hi Ferrari - bet you thought I'd gone.......

contacted Brother and they were distinctly unhelpful I have to report. They simply wanted me to box it up send it back to them for repair.....£127.00 thank you.

However, I fiddled around and eventually got the offending plastic/bakelite part back on the roller to appear satisfactory. I reassembled the machine - getting good at it all now !!!!. BUT

When I powered up it came on and "Innobella" appeared then immediately:

Shutting Down
All functions will be disabled.

then:

Shutting Down
Standby
On/Off to resume.

NONE OF THE KEYS ON THE MACHINE RESPONDS yet the display panel remains lit with the last message.

Taking out power and re-connecting just has the same cycle again.

I had a look on "messages: on Internet but NONE show me the solution/problem ? Is it finally "bucket material"........I'm a cussed/determined bugger when I get started .

Bill

Hello again Bill. I'm not surprised about Brother's response. Typical of a big corporate.

Ah, not so good. I've read that a hard reset may be required (but this will obviously depend on what is wrong, and that may be hard to tell)...

From the user manual (page 207), it explains how to factory reset

1. Press SCAN
2. Press up or down to choose 'Scan to Media'
3. Press up or down to choose 'Factory Reset'
4. Press 'Yes'
5. Press 'Stop/Exit

Hopefully that will do it.

I'm reading different instructions here though

http://www.manualslib.com/manual/355....html?page=108

So, maybe they're applicable (if the others aren’t)?

This power-on-reset is promising too (more like what I'd expect to be required):

Many thanks again friend:

No luck I'm afraid - the machine is in TOTAL "lock-up" it won't respond to pressing ANY buttons.

Even repowering (removing the power cable) and starting again it just goes back to "Shutting Down and Sanding by - "on-Off" to resume.......no response to any button

Will try your next one to see what happens. Bill
