2 soundcards, set sound card without rebooting

I have 2 soundcards and want to switch between the two without rebooting (use a script to switch etc).

I tried reading the help on alsactl and alsamixer but it doesn't say anything about switching the soundcards.

Linux is Debian Squeeze with gnome-session installed. Sound is alsa-base and alsa-utils installed.

Switching is pretty easy .I too have 2 soundcard on my system.I can switch between 2 soundcard simply by right clicking on the volume icon located at right of top menu bar and click sound preferences .After that go to Output tab and select the desired soundcard that's it !!
