2 Second Question :D

hiya...

Quick Background
I have a dedicated webserver running fedora 4, its a 2.4c, 1gb ram, 80 ata drive...

Problem

Its runs painfully slow... Its not underload and i believe it to be a OS problem... There are no users other than me and at the moment only static sites...

Question

I am new to the world of linux and i come from a hardcore dos background... Anyway could i get a few suggestions on were i sould be looking to diagnose my problem...

I have include the results of unixbench 4.1.0, top -c & dmesg to give you an idea of what i mean... This was run just after a fresh reboot...

Thanks

hey there lemans,

look at what I marked red..that is your problem rigth there...it appears spamassassin is causing your system to run slow because it's almost running with 100% cpu load

you might want to kill the process first before you do any further troubleshooting as to why it does that.

as root

Code:
kill -9 15227
should kill the process

good luck!

Hiya...

Thanks for the reply retiredsolider....

Right that probably made me look bit stupid but however its not like that... Here are the results from after looking running top -c for around 10 mins and its like it usually is around 20%...

Even under these conditions the server is still very slow could it be a disk access problem... Do you know any good sites for troubleshooting linux problems...

Quick note

What would really be cool is to see a log of the complete boot process and see whats probably causing problems... Were is the boot log stored as its a web server i cant see the boot process???

As it must take about 20mins to reboot the system...

Thanks Yo

hi again,

well most major logs are kept in /var/log/ so you might want to take a look at all those logs you have available in there.

I'd also like to know what you mean by the webserver is running slow. Does it feel slow as in once you're logged in via ssh it starts to lag (like when you type commands it takes about a second before each letter appears on your terminal?) or do you mean the actual web pages / images load too slow? Describe your slow to us please.

You might want to take a look at hdparm (man hdparm or google for it) - make sure you have hdparm enabled and set for maximum performance as your IDE devices allow.

According to your first post as well it appears that it's a dedicated server...so we're not dealing with a virtual server here correct? Virtual servers tend to run "slower" than actual dedicated servers. Just wanted to make sure that this is the case as well.

Hiya...

Thanks for the reply

No its not a virtual server... Also to explain the slowness better if i run cpanel or any php site on the server it grinds to a halt... When i go to ssh into the server there is a big long delay after i enter the user and pass . say 5 secs...

Its a bit hard to explain however the unixbench final results i have posted usually servers with less spec get an average of 150.00 or more... I even seen one that was running a pentium pro 200 and it got a hire final result then my server...

I have contacted the hosting company but they tell me that the hardware is there problem and the software is mine... Thats why any link to any site that discuss troubleshooting would be really cool...

Also i throw each log and cant see any that logs the boot have you any idea what the acutal file would be called...

Thanks again
