Smile XP Laptop- Ubuntu Desktop 8.04, Access from one to another

Hi Guys.
I have a Tower PC (Ubuntu 8.04) in my cupboard,it's connected to my Projector, I use this as a Media Player using XBMC
Tower is also connected to my Router (wire)and I can browse the web etc, using the projector as a monitor, the projector is also hooked up to my Xbox,
Sound from the PC Tower is connected to my Dolby Amp in my lounge.
The Tower has all my Music on it.

I have a laptop "Win XP Home" connected via my router (wireless)

the question .....

instead of having to boot-up the projector, lower the projector screen, then access my music in the tower, using a wireless keyboard and tracker ball.

Is it possible access the tower via my laptop access the music folder and play music, saves me booting up the projector and lowering the screen.

Thank You

Not that good with Ubuntu Yet, so if you can keep it very simple I would appreciate this

You could do it by installing a vnc server and connecting to that remotely.

The long and short of it is login and then...
Code:
sudo apt-get install x11vnc
x11vnc -storepasswd
x11vnc -forever -usepw
You should now be able to connect to the vnc session from your windows computer as long as you don't logout.

There are other ways, and you could just forward your xsession remotely, etc... but if you're connecting from windows to linux, vnc is about the easiest to setup.

Long term you might want to look at one of the other vnc options that lets you have more full control of your remote machine and doesn't attach to an existing session, but I think for now this should do what you're looking for.

Edit: Coworker pointed out: might wanna add java-vnc to first line and -httpdir /usr/share/vnc-java/ -httpport 5800 to the third line and then you can just point a web browers at the machines IP address (http://ipaddr:5800) and connect that way so you don't even have to install a client remotely.

Thanx rweaver for the fast reply will try this when I get home,
must add it seems to easy

sudo apt-get install x11vnc java-vnc
x11vnc -storepasswd
x11vnc -forever -usepw -httpdir /usr/share/vnc-java/ -httpport 5800

Have I read this right?

I bet I haven't,
it took me awhile just to get on-line with Ubuntu, it's nothing to do with the OS more to do with the dum user

again thanx it's appreciated

Nope, that's it exactly It's like anything else, there's a bit of a learning curve, but once you get over it life is much easier.
