Windows 2000 domain and Linux ftp server

Hello

I am running windows 2000 server as my PDC. I have suse 9.2 . In my domain all users have account and space on a windows 2000 file server. I was told that i could install Linux and have the ability of the users to access the files on the file server through the web. The users can eather acceess the files through ftp or a Web type interface. Like Yahoo Briefcase

briefcase.yahoo.com

This would be great if you could help me

Thanks Leonard Baxter

hello leonard,

itīs correct! why not?!
it doesnīt matter under which OS your ftp-server runs.
if ftp-server is runninn, you could access via IE.
so what is your exact problem?

The ftp server will be seriving a folder for each user of the domin (around 3000). I would like the linux box will connect to the DC and get user info and the location of there files on the file server. The file server is also 2000 server.

Linux machine does not have to be a ftp server it could also be a http server as long as it give the file access and the ability to upload and download files off the file server.

Thank for the help

Linux can get Windows domain accounts by using Samba - which you can use to join the Linux server to the domain and your users could access it like any other Windows file server:

www.samba.org

If you want to automatically use Windows usernames/passwords in other servers, if your FTP server supports PAM, you can use a Samba component called Winbind to do that. IMHO, there is a bit of a learning curve to do it. You could also possibly skip Samba, since Windows 2000 Active Directory uses LDAP and Kerberos, you may be able to directly authenticate using one of those protocols, I've never done it myself.
