Why is my internet upload speed greater than my download speed?

I use dial-up internet access. According to the following web site my download speed (to the computer) is significantly slower than my upload speed (to the internet). Isn't that backwards? Shouldn't download speed be faster?

My modem uses V.90 technology instead of the latest V.92 technology. I've read that V.92 makes upload speed as fast as download speed. This is the improvement V.92 has over V.90 which has upload speed slower than download. I borrowed a V.92 modem and got similar results, download is significantly slower that upload speed. Why is that? Is there a parameter somewhere that I can set to improve download performance? I've tried two Linux distro's and two computers. Same result. What's up?

BTW, my speeds are 44kbs down and 84 up.

While it's been quite a while since I've worked with modems, IIRC, it's impossible to get actual speeds greater than 56K over a phone line when you're dealing with audio (assuming you're in the US - are you?) - and that's with compression.

I would run the speed test a few more times & take what it gives you with a grain of salt. In other words, don't bank on its correctness, especially when you're orders of magnitude slower than most users of this service.
