What do two forward slashes in a url mean? (not the inital 2)

What do two forward slashes in a url mean? For example, in the cvs faq-o-matic:
https://ccvs.cvshome.org/fom//cache/217.html

Of course, I mean the two slashes between "fom" and "cache", not the two
after "https:".

They don't do anything different from 1 slash..

Try it on a local filesystem, eg ls /root/.ssh & ls /root//.ssh

It is of course possible to make it mean something by using it as an alias for another directory, but that's in the webserver setup.

Heh! Thanks Peter. "cd foo/bar" == "cd foo/////bar" works too. Neat.
