unable to ping, and connect to windows workstations

hello

I've run into a problem. My linux mandrake 10.0 offical has 2 net cards
eth0 ( connection to modem cable) and eth1( connected to hub).

I setup the internet sharing from the l9inx box. all Windows bioxes have internet(actually i'm writting this thread from my win2k).

in win2k box in networks connection settings i set up to point to the gateways which is the eth1(on linux box).
when i connect another windows box to the hub , it will have automatically assigned local IP, and i can use the internet.
The problem arises, that I can not see the Windows boxes from linux.
pinging the windows PCs results in" destination unreachable"

the windows boxes can see each other , so the file sharing is no problem.
Trying to see linuxbox from windows is not working neither.

I looked in google and so far i see ppl got problem to connect to internet, but are able to shre files, and i'm vice versa of it.

i'm running samba 3.06 on linux. firewall: shorewall
i suspect that i must do something with the firewall. but no idea what?
any ideas would be approciated.

if u need moreinfo just drop a msg and will be done.
thanx in advance

seb

Port 137 udp port 138 udp port 139 tcp must be open in the firewall. And to the samba paranoia: You must apply 3 equal user/passwd pairs to the system. One in the lindoze, one to the samba server ond one to the windoze.

wait a minute i don't have actually a lindows.
and as far as i know my 137 UDP 138 UDP and 139 TCP are open.

is it possible that i can not see linux box from my Win2k box, b'coz i enabled the TCP/IP filtering on Win2k box?

usually there is no problem connecting win2k boxes to samba linux. XP boxes could be diffrent. But you you should turn off any firewalls in the windoze.

all firewalls on the windows boxes are off.
the only firewall i got is the linuxbox.
btw i deselected the TCP/IP filtering on my win2k box and went search for computers. i entered the host name for linux and couldn't find it. but once i entered the ip of the gateway which is eth1. it found it!! BUT location unknown. i tried to ping from the prompt and still can not see it.

what in the world is it?
