Hey guys - I'm trying to ping my gentoo box "domokun" on my network "rushnet.net". I can't remember screwing around with any conf files, and it sort of stopped being able to be contacted by hostname. I've tried on multiple windows/linux boxes, flushed their DNS caches, fiddled with my router (but I don't think that's the problem). All the machines are on the workgroup "WORKGROUP", no domain controller or anything of the sort is present. The machines pull everything down via dhcp.
Whenever I try to ping domokun, it's slow to find it, then it resolves an outside ip... I guess that's domokun.com or something. As far as I can see, everything looks ok... hopefully I'm just missing something really simple.
Here's the appropriate config files from domokun:
/etc/host.conf
Code:
order hosts, bind
multi off
/etc/nsswitch.conf
Code:
passwd: compat winbind
shadow: compat
group: compat winbind
# passwd: db files nis
# shadow: db files nis
# group: db files nis
hosts: files dns wins
networks: files dns
services: db files
protocols: db files
rpc: db files
ethers: db files
netmasks: files
netgroup: files nis
bootparams: files
automount: files
aliases: files
/etc/resolv.conf
Code:
# Generated by dhcpcd for interface eth0
search rushnet.westell.com
nameserver 192.168.1.1
nameserver 192.168.1.1
/etc/conf.d/domainname
Code:
# /etc/conf.d/domainname
# When setting up resolv.conf, what should take precedence?
# 0 = let dhcp/whatever override DNSDOMAIN
# 1 = override dhcp/whatever with DNSDOMAIN
OVERRIDE=0
# To have a proper FQDN, you need to setup /etc/hosts and /etc/resolv.conf
# (domain entry in /etc/resolv.conf and FQDN in /etc/hosts).
#
# DNSDOMAIN merely sets the domain entry in /etc/resolv.conf, see
# the resolv.conf(5) manpage for more info.
DNSDOMAIN=""
# For information on setting up NIS, please see:
# http://www.linux-nis.org/nis-howto/HOWTO/
NISDOMAIN=""
/etc/conf.d/hostname
Code:
# /etc/conf.d/hostname
# Set to the hostname of this machine
HOSTNAME="Domokun"
Anything I'm missing that could help? Any ideas? This is seriously starting to freak me out at this point. It's pretty nice to remember a hostname instead of an ip
. Thanks in advance.
