Switching from DHCP to static IP

I have been running my server on an internal network with an IP address specified by DHCP. I am now ready to switch it over to be a live server and need to change to a static IP address (I have a spare address for this machine).

I have edited the files:
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0
/etc/sysconfig/network
/etc/hosts

The server boots up fine, Apache is running but I just cannot get any page up.

I think I may know what it is - does the server need to be given a hostname which appears in the DNS for this to work?

Sorry if I appear stupid asking this question, but I've scoured the net and can't find anything to answer it!

Thanks
