I am trying to network a SuSE 9.0 Pro system w/a XP Home system, and since I am new to Linux, have no idea where to begin. I've checked this site and a few others, not to mention a few books and am still stumped. Is the LIsA Daemon acceptable for this or do I need to use Samba or am I totally lost? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
They are both being run through a router w/ a DSL connection-I can access the web fine from both machines, as well as the print server in the router, but can't get the two boxes to see each other. Do I need to set a "share" on the Linux machine?
With SuSE you also need to allow traffic through ports 137-139. Well, you need to always, but with SuSE you need to explicitly open the ports. Find and run YaST (I believe it's in system) and go to firewall. two or three pages in there will be a bunch of check boxes and a text field; these allow you to specify which ports to open. I believe you will need to type in the box: 137:139
When I upgraded to SuSE 9.1 (on a fresh install) the firewall started refusing to open the ports anyway. The only way I could get the ports open was to completely disable the firewall (I disabled it temporarily with:
SuSEfirewall2 stop ).
Still no luck. I selected a file to share on the XP machine, but the Linux machine did not see it.
I could not find the page in Firewall to open ports, it did not seem to e an option-Can this be done in LIsA? Also, in LIsA, there is an option to set IP addresses for the network, and it seems as though the only address is for the Linux machine-Do I need to add the address and sunet mask for the XP machine?

Look for all the check boxes that say things like: http, web server, smtp, ftp, telnet, pop3, ssh, etc. (I'm in Windows at the moment, so I can't go check quickly). That page should also have the text feild that you need.
I don't know much about LIsA, but I doubt it. the SuSE firewall works through IP tables. If LIsA can change the IP tables, then mabee, but I still wouldn't suggest it. The firewall is built into various parts of the distribution, so it might turn back on unexpectedly. Your biggest hope (if this is your problem) is to alter the firewall setup.
The easiest way to turn the firewall off is to open a terminal (the black box in the lower left corner) and type:
su <enter>
<your root password> <enter>
SuSEfirewall2 stop <enter>
Then try to connect again. If you can, then you know the firewall is blocking those ports.
Ok, my machines can ping each other because i have internet in both, they are connected to a switcher/hub and the switcher/hub to the cablemodem.... but thats all, the ping cross all the internet to the other machine, i want a local network not a internet network....please help me i like suse linux too much but this thing it geting me crazy... please help
well no, if its a local address u r pinging such as 192.168.0.1 then u r not pinging via the internet otherwise u would be pinging everyone`s local network addy. Do ur machines havel local network addys that u have assigned? If not then give each one an address or name that they can use via ur home network
I understand what are you telling me, but i have a connection between xp home and xp professional (the one i have the partition linux) and when this 2 computers connect each other in a local network they dont have a different ip that the one assigned by dhcp, and they have local network because i have netbios over tcp/ip in the configuration of both, well in linux i have a netbios daemon for samba to work over tcp/ip configuration, then i dont need that tcp/ip configuration of a private network you are telling me because i have the netbios over tcp/ip in both, and dont work.... please help me ...why aren't working?
Let's start with one thing at a time (I don't mean to sound condescending, but I don't want to miss anything).
On the Windows machine go to:
Start->Run
This will give you a text box, type:
cmd
This should give you a command prompt (big black window)
Now type:
ipconfig
Now go to the linux machine. On the bottom there should be an icon for the konsole (black square). Open that and type:
su
Enter your root password, enter, then:
ifconfig
Now post these numbers (from both computers). The IP addresses should start the same, and only differ on the last the last one or two numbers.
Unplug the cable modem from the internet. Now on the SuSE machine type:
SuSEfirewall2 stop
Now you may need to wait a minute, but check to see if you can share now. If this doesn't work, please describe what happens. If I misunderstand your setup, please let me know.
Hi, thanks in advance gd2shoe, well first of all sorry for my bad english (i know it sucks ), i do what you say to me, I unplug the cablemodem and wait a minute to see what happend, then I cant share, but when i click (in the linux box) the windows network icon, show me nothing except the only difference was that he load the smb:/ without errors like before ... the before error was "no workgroup find", but anyway i cant see any machines connected, neither in the linux box and/or in the xp home machine. Ok now I post what are you asking me for, this are the results:
