Slow resolve of DNS names with DLink 504 ADSL router

System:

AMD Duron 900MHz
384Mb PC100 SDRAM

SiS motherboard with onboard LAN, audio, graphics.

Linux distro - Mandrake 10.0 using KDE desktop

Internet Connection - 512Kb ADSL
Router - DLink 504 rev B1 with inbuilt ADSL modem (192.168.1.1)
2nd router - Linksys Wireless-G router (in router mode not Internet gateway) (192.168.2.1)

The Linux machine is connected to the Linksys router by wired LAN, on net 192.168.2.0 and the DLink runs the net 192.168.1.0.

The Linux machine have been setup to use the Linksys router as the gateway and the DLink can acts as the DNS server, so it use that.

Network configuration on Linux is as followed:

IP - 192.168.2.4
Gateway - 192.168.2.1 (Linksys)

In resolv.conf file from /etc there is just 1 line:

nameserver 192.168.1.1

That is the DLink router.

The problem:

Whenever I type in an address in FireFox 0.8 (it is the same in Konqueror) it take a long time to resolve DNS names even if I am already on the website and clicks on a link for a page on same address.

On Windows Internet surfing is much faster, pages found at once and loaded and I'll have read a page or two before the Linux finally resolves the address and load their page (page loading is fast)

However I'm not sure if it is a problem with the networking, or the way I've set up the Linux - it is a fresh installation and this is my first time ever using Linux but want to learn it and set it up possibly to become my main desktop for work (such as email, network etc), with Windows for other uses.

I decided to find if it took a long time to resolve on pinging too, so I opened up the equilivent of DOS prompt (terminal?) on Linux and typed "ping wwwgooglecom" (with the dots of course. I have less than 5 posts, so cannot post URL's)

Resolved name at once and started pinging very quickly.

I'm guessing it's the browsers that's the problem? Hope you folks can help.

Many thanks in advance.

check your name server and default gateway in windows
(using "ipconfig /all" or "winipcfg")

then use the same values in linux (resolv.conf, routes)

DNS server and gateway is the same as for Linux.

The network is configured as:

3 Wintel computers connected to DLink router (192.168.1.1)

They are configured for 192.168.1.0 network and their gateway and DNS are set to:

DNS / nameserver - 192.168.1.1
Gateway - 192.168.1.1

On the Linksys (192.168.2.1) I have 2 Wintel computers connected by Wi-Fi and the Linux PC by wire

They are configured for 192.168.2.0 network and the computers on this have their gateway/DNS set to:

DNS / nameserver - 192.168.1.1
Gateway - 192.168.2.1

The Linksys router is configured to route to 192.168.1.0 but the Dlink is not configured to access 192.168.2.0.

Both the wintel PC on 192.168.2.0 have static IP (all PC have static IP's) as does the Linux.

All Windows PC does not have a problem resolving DNS names in Opera/FireFox however Linux does in FireFox/Konqueror

I did mention that the Linux box does not have any delay in resolving DNS addresses when I ping their DNS names such as wwwgooglecom or wwwbbccouk (with the dots) via console. It's just by doing it with web browsers such as FireFox/Konqueror that this take a long time, sometime as long as 10 seconds, sometime longer.

Sorry to top it but...

If no-one can help me here, can anyone suggest another place where I could get help with? Linux guru forum or something?

As the extremely slow Internet access on Linux box is very annoying and I'm ending up going back to Windows XP.

(before anyone suggest, yes I have reinstalled Linux although I was under the impression that with Linux, you shouldn't need to )

I do want to use Linux, learn it etc, but it's frustrating that I have to go and use my Windows machine to access a Linux help forum

Cheers

I can't offer you any help, but I can sumpathise. I've got the self same problem, only my Wintel gateway is connected to an Alcatel Speedtouch. If I connect in Firefox on the Linux box to say Yahoo's IP address, v. fast. If I connect to the domain name, it takes ages to resolve.

Anyone know anything more about this?

Thanks

DNS server? u dont need any nameserver. just start named (bind) service in linux. and change your dns ip to linux box ip. it can be your own caching nameserver.

Have you tried upgrading the firmware? I had the same problem until just recently, but this was my problem! Now the speed is just as fast as in Windows XP! I hope it will work for you too!!
