post results of:
host -a google.com | grep Received
host -a google.com 192.168.1.1 | grep Received
host -a google.com 4.2.2.2 | grep Received

and then the same for your ISP DNS server IP

You could try changing hosts to files dns (make a backup copy of the file so you can get back to where you were in the first place). IDK how much re-initialisation is necessary to make such a change take effect but a reboot is surely adequate. According to TBOne in this LQ post "If "host " succeeds then it's very likely a problem with /etc/nsswitch.conf since "host" is one of the few programs (two others are dig and nslookup) that don't use that file" (my bolding). Perhaps mdns4 is not working well on your system.

Brilliant! Thank you so much! I think changing nsswitch works. Wonder what was wrong?

I guess mdns4_minimal is not working well. It's not a feature of the Slackware distro that I use so I can't help you any further but at least you now know where the problem lies. Time for another thread, about mdns4?
