Ok, my domain is setup. I try to join the domain from my win 2k machine and i get this error
"The following error occured attempting to join the domain "Home":
The account used is a computer account. Use your global user account or local user account"
I'm baffled, I've setup the username in Samba and also as a Unix user.
I'm kind of new to this myself, but you may need to check your "samba.conf" for the "security = " You may have it set to something that doesn't work. You'll need it set to user or server. Perhaps that's it?

Rep:
I amd using Redhat 7.2 as a PDC and had the same problem. I corrected it by adding a machine account and now my domain is working fine. A machine account must be added to the Linux box for every computer you want to join the domain. Here is how I added the machine account. This must be done as root.
1.
# adduser -g machines -d /dev/null -s /bin/false -c computername -n computername$ <Enter>
All of the above goes on one lone
2.
# passwd -l computername$ <Enter>
Locking password for computername$
3.
# smbpasswd -a -m computename <enter>
Added user computername$
computername is the name of the machine you want to add to the domain. The $ sign must be in the locations shown for a computer account. This assumes that you have already added a group called machines. Hope this helps.
god, I have the same problem
I set up the samba domain. I got the docs out of the IBM website. I made computers and user accounts on the linux box, so I ran to a friken window$ box and tryed to join it,
took like 5 minutes to join and I got the dialog box asking for username and password, I type in the root and password,
I got a wellcome to the samba domian , so after a reboot, I try to login in to the domain, and I got the error the the samba domain does not exist or was un able to find it.
I know the smb.conf is right, because I had this file before ( time ago) and I was able to login from one windows box.
I am having the same exact problem as you....i can go to \\FILESERVER from a command prompt, i joined the domain from My Computer > Network Ident. but when I reboot and select the domain from the drop-down and put in user/pass it says the domain was unavailable.....
