replaced eth0 network card new network card comes up as eth1

slackware 12.0 kernel 2.6.27

i have some flakey network issues and want to try another network card

i switched the cards and as the system is booting up i can see the new card
identified as eth0 but ifconfig says eth0 is not there, mii-tool says it eth1

rc.inet1.conf is setup to use eth0, all other eth are blank, this is the
only network card

i have no modprobe, just whatever the system finds as it comes, the module
for the network card is in lsmod but not used by anything

lspci shows the correct network card

thanks

To understand how names are given to you cards you should check several scripts in /lib/udev/rules.d (assuming you use 12.2) or /etc/udev/rules.d

Nevertheless, if your goal is only to allocate interface names as you wish to your cards, simply edit /etc/udev/ruldes.d/70-persistent-net-rules.

Changing one or some 'NAME =' tokens, leaving alone the remainder of the rules, should suffice.

The correct answer is /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules

THAT is the file causing your new card to come up as eth1.

If you have removed the old card, just delete this file and restart, when the machine comes back up, it will set your new card as eth0 and re-create this file.

/etc/udev/rules.d/75-network-devices.rules was it, it had 4 nics eth0-3, thank you

# If you delete this file, /lib/udev/nethelper.sh will try to
# generate it again the next time udev is started.
