Talking Problem in creating Lan in Linux and windows environment


1.)Hello everyone!. I'm new here and a beginer to linux. Can anyone tell me why to link up 2 computer with diffrence OS (Windows XP and Linux Redhat v9.0 )?

2.)Why have to patched kernel?


I do not have much about linux knowledge, i need someone to guide me step-by-step.

i)Intel Pentium 4 2.4G
i845PE Chipset
onboard RealTek RTL-8139
Windows XP SP with 1a

ii)Intel Pentium 3 733MHZ
Via Chipset
Cnet Pro200 PCI
Linux Red Hat v9.0

In a dual OS network with XP and LINUX, you will need a program called samba. I'm sure there is a redhat rpm for this prog. Also at the samba site there is a gui frontend, so that you can configure it more easily, rather than messing with the config file. Although, you do tend to learn more when you do just that. If you would like step by step help, just email me. I have successfully installed samba, and my home network runs great!
xp media server, 4 xp clients and 2 linux boxes running mandrake. 1 of those being a dual boot. good luck
