Unhappy Printer Problem Mandrake 8

I have this problem with the HP 2100M Laserjet printer, it's hooked directly up to the network but I din't know how to get it to work in Linux, the drivers appear when I go to install a new printer but I don't know how to fill in all the stuff like IP's and Addresses and Ports and that kind of stuff, I have now idea where it all is and where to find it but I do know I want to have printer capability in linux. Please help me in anyway possible. Thanks!

If your computer is running effectively as a standalone machine connected to a small local network, then you could try getting the information from Windows (either your machine, or another that's on the network). You can do this by right-clicking on 'My Computer' and selecting 'Properties' from the drop-down menu. Have a look around (=I can't remember exactly where the settings will be), probably in 'Network Devices'. As long as your network is not entirely DHCP based (aka 'Automatic IP addresses' under Windows), you should be able to find the printer's IP address.

If you are hooked up as a client on a fairly large network, then you may be able to do the above, but you may not. If not, then find someone who either has 'super user' priviledges and do the above, or find your network admin.

If you are the 'network admin', why do you not connect the printer directly to a 'spare' (or cheap) computer and set that up as a print server.

you have luck

if your printer is connected directly to your computer, you can set iy up like this.
open a terminal and type: printtool
click on add printer
click on local printer or if you see local printer first, click on it
and click on add printer

if your printer is a usb printer, you need to enter the command in the space where it says device name;
enter: /dev/usb/lp0

then look through the menu that has the name of all other printers, and try to find your printer name.
for example, if your printer is a hp-deskjet960c, look for it.
then if it a postscript printer, highlight postscript and click okay or enter
print a test standard test to make sure it work fine

have fun
