No Internet connection even though YaST appears to recognize network cards
Hi I'm a newbie (to both Linux in general and Internet forums), so if this isn't the right place for this question, sorry/please point me elsewhere. I've tried a few times over the past year to get an Internet connection set up on a SuSE 10.1 laptop with no success using madwifi drivers for the wireless card. This time I'm determined to see it through but can't find any answers on the Internet that solve my issue.
My wireless card is an Atheros AR5006X built into a Fujitsu A3040 laptop, and it works fine on Windows XP. My ethernet card (same machine) is a Broadcom NetXtreme BCM5751M, which also works fine in XP. I just looked in YaST2 and as far as I can tell, it's happy with both cards and there are no other cards. However, when I try to get online, I get a box that says "NetworkManager is Connecting" for a while and eventually disappears with no connection. I connect using a Belkin wireless router and Linksys cable modem that are working fine for multiple XP machines.
Any help would be appreciated, please let me know what other information you need. Thank you!

On the suse website is a lot of information about wireless networking ,depending on each version of suse the possible way how to do it.
Is the ethernet card correct configured ?
IS indication led that there is a connection working on ? On the modem I mean Off course when you use Linux
I tried going to the SuSE website, but either they didn't have an answer for my particular problem or they had one and I didn't understand it.
I don't know how to check to see if the ethernet card is correctly configured (was not kidding about being a newbie, heh). Everything looks okay to me, but when I check KNetworkManager, the icon next to "Wired Network" is always just a black X. Reconnecting does not help. Oddly, sysinfo tells me that I am online, but I cannot ping anything, even my router, much less connect to a website.
My modem's LEDs are on, but I think they always are when my router is on.

Anyhow on my modem there is one led that goes off when it has no connection with the ethernet card
The ethernet card what does it use DHCP or PPPE the IP adress is it static or dynamic ?
If you run DHCP than it should be configure with DHCP IP Dynamic other wise it should be PPPE IP adress dynamic
Look in windows what it use DHCP or PPPE
The ethernet card (as well as the wireless card) uses DHCP. I have determined that the Internet is accessible when I hook the computer up to the cable modem directly with an ethernet cable, but I can't even ping out when my router is in between them.
I've used YaST to set both cards to DHCP/dynamic IP, and connect through default gateway 192.168.2.1 (my router), but there's still no connection.

So you use a adsl modem and a separate router and not as I called it a modem-router , but if you can connect to the internet without the separate router than there is something wrong with the router.
My ethernet card is connected to my modem-router.
AS fare as I know If you use two ethernet cards than you should also has to decide the flow of the data stream
To avoid problems I switch the embedded ethernet card off , although I know that using two cards can have there
benefits.
And do not know if it depends on the country but my standard gateway is much longer than you,res it has 11 numbers and 3 dots
