networking xp and slackware

ok, i have my xp box that connects to the internet via dsl. and i also have a slackware i want to connect to the internet via the xp box. on the windows computer i have 2 ethernet cards, one that goes to the dsl modem and the other that goes to slackware 8.1. however, in this connection (xp to slack), xp just keeps reporting that the 'network cable is unplugged' in the network connections dialog. eth0 is set up as dhcp and ifconfig seems to spit out the right stuff. where is the fault here, and how can i fix it??
