network needs tweaking?

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but google didnt really help me here....

I am running Slackware, somewhere between 9.1 and 10.0 (partially updated)

I just moved to college and got on their network. I have never used an actual network before--everything has been dial up. So I got here, and set up the network with netconfig to use automatic DCHP. So far, so good. Browsing works, amsn works, email works. But, I can't get anything like LimeWire or Azureus to work. Do I just need to tweak something, to get those ports to read the network? Also, some FTP sites won't give me access--something about no reverse lookup. I am completely new to ethernet and networking, so i don't really know where to start.

Thanks.

For ftp, try using a passive connection.

My guess is that your filesharing apps are being blocked by the campas firewall.
