Lightbulb net ipv4.ip_forward = 1


Hai friends,

I am using linux 2.6 kernel in my embedded systems.For packet forwarding i need to change the file sysctl.conf like un comment the line like this
#controls IP Packet forwarding
net ipv4.ip_forward = 1

Why i need to change this..please give me the technical reason ...

Hi Sabarinath,

forwarding of IP packets is disabled by default, because it is dangerous.
If you want to forward IP packets, you should first setup a firewall, and some rules to limit which packets can be forwarded.

Maybe you have a private network, in which case it is not so important.
However, if a node is connected to the internet and it has forwarding but
no firewall rules, then someone can use that node to relay spam and other messages and maybe hide the original sender.
