mount_smbfs (osx) locks on browse to debian shares

I have a freshly running debian 3.1r1 boxen running. It has several file shares on it that are functioning well. They are accessable and browsable from windows machines with no problem.

From osx 10.4, the shares can be mounted via command line, or through the "connect to server" feature in finder.

However, when I "browse" the NETWORK in finder, and select my debian server, the "connect" button shows up, as it should. When I click this for a windows server it will promptly display a list of available shares. When I click connect for my debian server, the little colorful pinwheel just spins and spins until I have to force quit "mount_smbfs"

Anyone know what's going on?
