When you say you "stopped" and "restarted" the network you mean you ran the system's initscript ?
If yes, then it ran ifconfig without the "hw blah blah"

run "ifconfig eth0 down"
"ifconfig eth0 hw ether MAC"
"ifconfig eth0 up"

and it should work.

Btw, why do you want to change it ? I don't think of any *legal* reason for changing the MAC

Wink

i tried with your suggestions...
thanks a lot!
it runs!

your questions:

quiet, quiet, it's "legal"
my internet router (i cannot manage it) "see" the actual mac address of my firewall (arp cache)
i have a spare firewall with another mac address
in case of crash of my firewall it's only to avoid lost of precious time to modify (on request) arp cache....

quiet...
