mangle and custom chains

Is there any way to use mangle with custom chains?

It seems to be working happily with e.g. INPUT or any other system chain but not with the ones I have created.

The reason being I would like to mark a packet but I would like this to make it relevant only to my chains. So mark as soon as it enters my first custom chain, then run/unset the marking based on iptables conditions.

In my head it all makes sense but I can't find a way to mark packets

How are you mangling them with INPUT? what iptables commands?
What error does it give you when you attempt to do it in a user defined (custom) chain?

As stated, I'd like to mangle on custom chains. Not the INPUT or any default ones.
The iptables commands to do so is what I'm looking for.
The error is the usual iptables gives : iptables: No chain/target/match by that name.
