logging packet loss

Hello!

Has anybody got a good idea how to log packet loss? I am having some problems with my current ADSL connection. It happens from time to time that the connection either gains up to 80% packet loss or it suddenly drops completely.

I would like to start logging and archiving the packet loss over time. I happen to host a linux server 24/7 on my own LAN, and I thought this would be an ideal place to run a logging script. As an addition, I would also love to generate some packet loss charts (packet loss versus time) for better overview.

My initial idea was to run a ping scan every minute. The script would continuously ping a given online IP for one minute, every minute. This would allow me to extract the percentage of packet loss from stdout of the ping scan for each minute. I would then save the data to certain files on the disk and use a PHP script to generate the charts.

Thoughts, ideas, improvements?

You might want to try something like smokeping. I have only used it once or twice so I am not an expert on its functions.

That's an interesting tool you found there.
I'll try it out. Thanks.
