linux vmware networking problems

Hello all!

I've managed to install a Redhat v9 as my guest. Winxp is running as the host machine. ICS is enabled. I use dailup for net access.

i've setup vmware to use NAT (vmnet08) for networking purposes. the problem arises when I set my linux network config to dhcp and activate the network card
Below is the error i get when I activate the card

Determinign IP information for etho:1... iptables: No chain/target/match by that name
SIOCSIFFLAGS: Cannot assign requested address
SIOCSIFFLAGS: Cannot assign requested address
failed.
iptables: Bad rule (does a matching rule exist in that chain?)

below is the content of my /etc/resolv.conf file

nameserver 192.168.23.2

below is my host machine (xp) ipconfig output

Ethernet adapter VMware Network Adapter VMnet8:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
Description . . . . . . . . . . . : VMware Virtual Ethernet Adapter for
VMnet8
Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-50-56-C0-00-08
Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.23.1
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . :
DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.23.2

Also i ran the following command to test

ifconfig eth0:1 up

The result was
SIOCSIFFLAGS: Cannot assign requested address

What is that i'm doing wrong? i feel like the ip the dhcp is providing is used somewhere else on the network? is that why the error?

any help is very much appreciated

TIA
