Linux Os stuck at boot time probing for ppp0

Hi,
I have this 3Com 3c556 nic (this have both ethernet and modem connector).
my ethernet card is working fine, thanks to this forum (able to connect to LAN and internet), but when i tried to configure modem.

i used RHdialup Configuration and kppp dialer setup, first it was not able find modem, i am not good in this so was trying many things from this newsgroup.

my ifconfig was not displaying any info for ppp0 (only eth0 and lo were shown in results).
now the biggest problem is, i am not able to boot from linux.
when i boot it goes up to
"Bringing up interface ppp0" then stuck there

any help ? how to disable this probing at boot time.

thanks
Abinash

I'm no expert myself, but I believe that 'brining up interface ppp0' is attempting to connect to the internet at boot-time - not helpful if you're on dialup.

Try booting to runlevel 1 (single user mode) and changing what services are run on startup (I think you can do this with LinuxConf).

suggestion and the why got stuck

I'm not sure but if your modem turns out to be a winmodem well.. do some reading and sweating because these are hard and almost impossible to get it working. it is possible though.. but hard.
the reason while it gets stuck is because it's trying to connect which can't. this can take up even 10minutes. but afterwards u will get the this message ppp0 [FAILED] then it will continue booting.
I had a messed up eth0 config ones.. it did the same...hanged for 10 minutes and then it continued booting

Yeah, I had eth0 hang for 'bout 10mins before. I dunno whether it has anything to do with this, but I found that turning off DHCP and setting your own IP manually seemed to help. Mainly, it only had problems with DHCP when I was the only one on the network (i.e. all others had their machines turned off).
