As I don't have the mony to buy a switch or hub I'd like to know if it it possible (and how) to connect computer1 directly to computer2 one using ethernet (10baseT) and allowing computer2 to see and use the network connected to computer1.
Computer1 has 2 ethernet cards, one 100baseTx card for the network (tulip) and a 10BaseT card to connect to the other computer (3c59x).
Thanks.
You need to run a crossover cable from one computer to the ohter. You should be able to go to any decent computer shop and get your hands on one. You can also find diagrams of how to make them on line. Use google:
Lets start at layer one. Make sure you have a link light. Both interfaces do have IP addresses, correct? Next question, are we trying to ping by name or IP address?
Breezwell> I dont belive my /etc/hosts matters If im trying to access by IP...
Im using Debian Cid. and I don't get any response from ping if I set the 'route'. otherwise it says: network unreachable.
I dont think the fire wall is set to block ICMP but considering its sitting infrount of the cable modem and not either of these to machines I dont think it would matter.
