Question Linux NIC to NIC how?

As I don't have the mony to buy a switch or hub I'd like to know if it it possible (and how) to connect computer1 directly to computer2 one using ethernet (10baseT) and allowing computer2 to see and use the network connected to computer1.
Computer1 has 2 ethernet cards, one 100baseTx card for the network (tulip) and a 10BaseT card to connect to the other computer (3c59x).
Thanks.

You need to run a crossover cable from one computer to the ohter. You should be able to go to any decent computer shop and get your hands on one. You can also find diagrams of how to make them on line. Use google:

www.google.com

and the keyword 'crossover cable' and you should be able to find out how to make one.

Then all you should need to do is set up your /etc/hosts files and be off and running. I have not tried this with Linux but it should work.

Lets start at layer one. Make sure you have a link light. Both interfaces do have IP addresses, correct? Next question, are we trying to ping by name or IP address?

lemme know

Link lights are on, both have IPs (computer1:192.168.10.1 computer2:192.168.10.2). I was pinging with IP.

What distribution are you using?
Also, post a copy of your /etc/hosts file if you can.

huh...

what message do you get? Destination unreachable, host not found??

Is your firewall set up to block ICMP?

Get a portscanner and see what you get. If you are using rh72, nmap is builtin with the frontend.

Breezwell> I dont belive my /etc/hosts matters If im trying to access by IP...

Im using Debian Cid. and I don't get any response from ping if I set the 'route'. otherwise it says: network unreachable.
I dont think the fire wall is set to block ICMP but considering its sitting infrount of the cable modem and not either of these to machines I dont think it would matter.

Thanks!

Hi

Tyr to ping the peer machine. then check the arp . u cna find out any packet flow is their or not.

ping from one window and run tpcdump in another window, check the packet flow.

Mostly cable Crimping may be the problem

Im sure the cable is fine.. It was just used not to long ago to connect a couple switches for a lan party...

I belive the subnet mask was set to 255.255.255.0

p.s.: I'll try the arp/tcpdump in a while..

I would troubleshoot like this:

1. Verify that the cable is good, use a tester or a known good cable. You should see link lights on both NIC's

2. Verify that IP's are set as you say, and that subnet mask is as you say.

3. Ping 127.0.0.1
Ping your own IP addy.
Ping the other machines addy.

Do this on both machines. If you get through everything on both machines EXCEPT pinging each other.. then your cable is bad.

If you have trouble pinging 127.0.0.1 on either one, then you have a problem with your TCP/IP stack.

What does 'ifconfig' show?
Does 'ifconfig -a' show something different?
