Linux can not ping windows servers 2003??


windows servers 2003 can ping linux system,while linux system can not do that? why??? Thank you for your attention and help!

Is there error mensage?
Verify if your iptables is enabled.

Is the Win server blocking ICMP requests? You may want to give us more detail as it is possible to ping 2003 servers with linux.

Windows 2003 was termed "hardened by design."

It does deny icmp by default.

It also shows us we need to start learning better ways to diag networks. Routers and many other OS's are starting to block by default.

Since ping is a two way result you knew the connection was good, there was no use to try it backwards also.

I agree with jefro. At the very least, a better test would be to telnet to a listening port to see if it responds...always a good test in a pinch. Otherwise, a full fledged monitoring solution would be needed.
