Linksys WRT54GS2 Router forward port 22 to RasPi as Proxy Server: Problem

HI all! I have a Linksys WRT54GS2 router. I just added a Raspberry Pi running Raspian with the intention of using it as a proxy server.

The router doesn't do static IP addresses. I've configured it to assign IP addresses in the 10.2.1.100 to 10.2.1.255 range. I assigned the RasPi and address of 10.2.1.50 and it's able to use the network & internet fine.

But when I attempt to connect to the RasPi from OUTSIDE of the network, it won't work. But when I let the RasPi get it's address via DHCP, outside connections work without a hitch. All I can figure is that since the router didn't assign the address, it doesn't think it's a valid address.

I'd let the RasPi get its address via DHCP if the router would be able to keep track of which address to which it should forward the traffic.

I'm considering installing the DD-WRT 3rd party firmware. But that seems rather drastic. Does anyone have any other ideas? Or is that the best route to go?

Has anyone here used DD-WRT? Is there anything about it that I should be concerned with?

TIA!

The WRT54GS2 has firewall functionality. If the static IP is used without DHCP, the firewall policy should be configured to allow incoming connection from outside go through.

DD-WRT...

I have used it on a WRT54GL and it works well, but be sure to choose the right version of DD-WRT for your version of the router.

Thanks for the info. I had never even given that possibility a thought. I thought I just had to forward the port to the IP address and that was it.

And sorry for the delay in my reply. I've had some issues come up that I was dealing with.
