LAN / Internet setup problem

HELP ...Im very new to linux.

Im using Mandrake 10 and cant connect to the net.
I have an ADSL router for internet and it works fine with Windows Xp .

I have setup the LAN to the same IP's, same DNS etc but Im missing something for sure.
The LAN is showing as Not Connected

Any pointers would be much appreciated for things to check.

Thanks
Tony

Thanks .........only one PC ....no others. Not sure how to ping. Used an ADSL router rather than a ADSL modem as its more secure on the net.
Im sure its just a config problem cause Im so new at this I dont know what or how to check. Thanks again any tips appreciated.

Since your using a router configuring an adsl connection is not required.

Have you have tried using Mandrake control center to configure a LAN connection?

Does the output of ifconfig show anything for eth0?
/sbin/ifconfig eth0

Did you select DHCP or configure a static IP address?
Did you set the gateway address as the IP address of the router (internal)?

That won't quite work, try setting your IP address to 10.1.1.2 instead of 192.164.0.7, if that doesn't fix it right off then yea post the output from the route command and your resolv.conf.

With the ADSL daemon, as michaelk stated you don't usually need that if your device is a DSL "Router."

Oh, and ping is easy, open a terminal window and type,. "Ping 10.1.1.1" then use CTRL-C to stop it.

Well Tony,
Sounds like you are going about it the wrong way. YOur ADSL Modem/Router ic a combo unit, knowing that you are connected in windoze means you are for sure getting a sync from your server. You should go the the network setup in your mandrake and set it to DHCP as the router will set the internal address. This is esspecially true for you as you only have one computer. One more thing, you may (depending on your internet provider) need to put in DNS server addresses.
