I am routing.
As I said, I did extactly the same things since a fresh install of both ubuntu and debian, and routing the traffic through the vpn worked only in the second. It was impossible even to ping through the vpn with ubuntu.

I tried this on two completely different servers, and the result was the same... Would you mind to test it too?

EDIT:
I forgot to say that debian and ubuntu openvpn's version I get with "apt-get install" is different: ubuntu as a newer one (maybe the last, I don't remember) while Debian has 2.1_rc11 (I noticed it when an option was missing). So, it can also be a bug of the version which is installed in Ubuntu... Maybe I'll give it a try

I have the same problem and found the answer at https://frozentux.net/iptables-tutor...tml/x4033.html
the first to iptables rules from that link is applied and just gets work

Can you please elaborate how did you setup a transparent proxy to achieve SNAT? I am facing a similar issue
